About Dental Emergencies

Emergencies are unexpected and often stressful. Your child might sustain a knee to the mouth during soccer practice, for example. Adults are also injury prone, whether a popcorn hull becomes lodged between the teeth and gums or a cracked tooth begins causing acute pain. At Czaplicki Family Dentistry, our team is prepared to help you when you need us most.

Common dental emergencies include:

  • A broken or chipped tooth
  • Knocking out a tooth due to trauma
  • A bitten tongue or cheek
  • An intense toothache
  • Food or other item lodged between teeth
  • A painful dental or gum infection
  • Damaged jaw joints

If your emergency may require stitches, or you suspect a broken jaw, go to the nearest emergency room for urgent care. Once first aid has been provided by the staff, contact us to discuss your next steps.

Reduce Your Risk for Emergencies

The best defense against a dental emergency are preventive measures. Dr. Don and Cathleen Czaplicki highly recommend that anyone who participates in sports (children as well as adults) wear a sports mouth guard to protect against or reduce the effect of injuries to the teeth and soft tissue. In addition, do not neglect good daily oral hygiene at home, coupled with six-month checkups and cleanings in our office. These preventive dental visits allow us to detect and treat potential dental problems or early, existing problems, before an emergency situation arises.

Dental First Aid

Persistent Pain

If you experience dental pain, rinse your mouth vigorously with water. Use floss to dislodge any food particles lodged between teeth. If pain persists, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and call our office.

Dislodged Tooth

When a blow to the mouth causes a tooth to fall out, stop and look for the tooth. If it is extremely dirty, gently dust off dirt, then place the tooth into a small cup or bag with either milk or the patient’s saliva. Do not manipulate the tooth’s nerve. Bring the tooth with you to our office since there is always a possibility for reattaching it. Control bleeding by applying gauze, a clean rag, or a moist teabag over the empty socket, and ask the patient to bite down to hold it in place. Gentle pressure should be applied. Call us on the way to our office, if possible.

Damaged Soft Tissue

A bitten tongue or cheek, or laceration to the gum tissue, will bleed. Apply a clean, moist cloth or gauze, as well as gentle pressure. Contact us as soon as possible so we can determine the extent of the damage during an exam.
